Inmates Arrested Following Correctional Officer Assault at Sumter CI
FDC’s Office of Inspector General arrests six inmates for attack

BUSHNELL, Fla. — A Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) Officer was physically attacked/battered April 19 while at their post at Sumter CI. At approximately 2:00 p.m., the correctional officer was attacked by multiple inmates and sustained injuries. Other inmates came to the officer’s aid and the incident was brought under control by officers who came to assist.

Secretary Mark Inch said, “I want to commend the staff and inmates who came to this officer’s aid during this vicious attack. Our officer showed courage and perseverance under extreme duress. I appreciate the quick and thorough investigation into this incident by the Inspector General, which led to the arrest of these inmates.”

The FDC Office of Inspector General conducted a comprehensive criminal investigation into the incident and arrested the six inmates on charges of Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Depriving an Officer of Means of Protection/Communication and False Imprisonment.

The six inmates were transported to the Sumter County Jail for a criminal court arraignment. The FDC OIG would like to recognize the assistance provided by Sumter County Sheriff William O. Farmer and his office for the transportation and booking of these inmates.

The following exemptions apply to the redactions:

Medical information pertaining to a prospective, current, or former officer or employee. § 119.071(4)(b), F.S.

Information regarding a victim’s statement and identity. § 945.10(1)(f); 119.071(2)(j), F.S.

The correctional officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged.

The dorm involved in this incident is not under medical isolation or medical quarantine. The entire facility remains on restricted movement.
