Media Invitation to Heel Together K-9 Graduation

WHAT: The Heel Together Academy (HTA), and the Florida Department of Corrections are pleased to invite media to attend the celebration of the HTA 10th Graduating K-9 Class at Avon Park CI.

WHEN: Monday August 1, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. EST Media should arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. for processing and equipment set up. Late arrivals cannot be accommodated.

WHY: Heel Together is a job credentialing program partnership between Avon Park CI and Highlands County Sheriff Office (HCSO). The program is used to train, socialize and adopt rescue dogs. The dogs are cared for by eligible inmate handlers as they go through a 13-week basic obedience course to make the dog more adoptable. Through successful completion of the program requirements, inmate participants have the opportunity to become certified dog handlers by the State of Florida Department of Education.
